4 Tips to Handle Dry, Coarse Hair

Share It:

My hair has been a challenge from day one. I was born with super curly, frizzy, light-blonde hair and pretty much resembled a Q-Tip for most of my early years. I started to get my hair relaxed at the beginning of high school, and struggled to find salons that were comfortable working with my unique texture and color. Light blonde, even when it's natural (like mine), is prone to breakage - making relaxers and other straightening techniques extremely damaging. In December, I cut my hair into a "lob" and realized quickly that I would have to straighten it daily in order to get it into a bun or ponytail. Before the big cut, French braids and messy buns were my go-to for natural hair days - now, it's been tough to wrangle my strands into a little rat tail at the nape of my neck.

Need some tips on how to let your mane recover? So do I -
it's a work in progress, but here's what I've got:

1. Stop washing your hair with shampoo so much.

Especially if you have curly or textured hair, you can get away with just one or two washings per week. Shampoo typically dries out my hair, but I recently found an oil-based product by L'Oreal that does the job without creating a ton of unnecessary dryness. I also love shampoo from Hask - another oil-based, sulfate free system that hasn't been as harsh on my strands and scalp. For more information on different washing and drying methods, click here.

2. Lay off the heat.

"We all know that heat is horrible for our hair, but sometimes it is a necessity to tame it. I try to only dry my hair on the weekends when I will actually be seen at events." -Hayley Taylor, Styled and Taylored. Hayley has a good point - if you're only going to class or working as a nanny (hi) during the week, your hair doesn't have to be perfectly coiffed.

3. Deep condition.

I seriously have tried all the deep conditioners in the book (I think) and lately am super into Shea Moisture products (like this one) for a really deep treatment.  Jordyn over at Fairy Princess Diaries also has a DIY hair mask you can make yourself.

I recently discovered Hask Macadamia Oil hair products - they're oil-based, sulfate-free shampoos, conditioners, deep conditioners, and leave-in oils. I LOVE them - and using the entire system (shampoo/conditioner/deep conditioner/oil) left my dry, coarse, and over-processed hair feeling smooth and healthy. I'm doubly excited because I just saw Hask in my local Walgreen's - they had deep conditioner pouches and leave-in oils for under $3 each. Perfect size (and price) to test out!

4. Find protective products that work for you.

I personally like to use protective products made of natural ingredients and LOVE this blowout cream by Shea Moisture - only a coin-sized amount in my hand spread through my hair will make it easier to brush, dry quicker, and give me a super smooth and hydrated feel. I usually pair that with a tiny bit of oil from Hask to make sure I'm protecting my hair in the healthiest, most natural way I can - I just feel better about knowing what exactly is going in my hair as much as possible. Yes, You Can: Open Your Own Creative Business

Share It:
Over the summer on The PDX Belle, we met a lot of really cool small business owners. Most of them were young women who decided, one day, they wanted to follow their hearts and do something that just really got them going. This is important - we can do things that we love for a living. We can take risks. And we can usually figure it out as we go along.

This is the point of my #GirlBoss series that was started last summer - to introduce you first to an amazing small business, but then to introduce you to the fabulous creator that inspired it all.

Meet Jennifer!
On Tuesday, I highlighted some really cute stuff (a tote and adorable decal) from a shop called Dandymark. Today, I'm highlighting Jennifer, the face behind all the cheeky totes, clever notecards, and unique stickers you'll find online.

Friday Five: Little Things That Make You Feel Like You've Got it Together

Share It:

Maybe your space is super messy, you're cutting it close on a deadline, or just don't know what tomorrow might hold -- one of those days ...  Lately I've had a good handful of those.

Coming home from a semester abroad that involved traveling to absolutely amazing locations and opened my eyes to so many new worlds was a strange feeling. I don't know where I'll live this semester (or after I graduate). I don't really have a plan for post grad. And I felt like I lost control of my health and fitness while I was abroad. So this break has really been devoted to regaining control.

It's okay to admit that life is not always as perfect as it looks on Instagram or on your favorite blogs - but there are a few (super easy) ways to adjust your mindset and sort of trick yourself into believing that yes, you've got it together, and
you're totally killing it.
  1. Set your iPhone and laptop background to something pretty and uplifting - a graphic like one of these usually does it for me. Random, but having this type of thing set as my iPhone background just calms me down. Try it out!
  2. Sweat. Go for a brisk walk. Hit the gym. Do an ab routine on your floor - Whatever It Takes to Get Your Blood Flowing and remind you That You are in control, you're strong, and you're amazing.
  3. Get organized. Start small. Make a list in your planner of achievable tasks - like making your bed, folding a few items of clothing, and answering a couple emails. Write them down in a pretty colored pen, in neat handwriting, and check them off as you complete them. (I swear it's the little things!)
  4. Put yourself together. I'm not talking prom, but pull yourself together. Sweats or yoga pants are not going to make you feel invincible, but your favorite pair of jeans and new booties will definitely help. Make your goal to feel like if you open up your front-facing camera on accident, you will not throw your phone on the ground as fast as you can ;)
  5. Call your mom. Or a friend who you know will lift you up, or someone who is good at positive reinforcement and can help you get back on the right track. You know you'd return the favor!

Have something that does the trick for you every time? Feel free to comment and share - I've been feeling a little frantic myself lately - I'm facing a whole lot of transition in these upcoming months - and I'd love some tips!

PDX Fit Gal's Guide: yogaRIOT!

Share It:
What are you talking about?
  • Where: yogaRIOT! 7126 SE Milwaukie Ave, 2nd Floor, Portland OR
  • What: Baptiste Method Yoga - also offering guided meditation classes, Pilates classes, and community events
  • What to wear: yoga gear - I prefer tight, minimal workout gear that won't get in my way during most poses. Check out the links at the bottom of the page for inspo
  • How much? $15 drop-in fee, or $49 monthly unlimited membership
  • Why does it matter? I haven't always enjoyed practicing yoga or seen it as more than just another method of "working out" - but this studio showed me the benefits of yoga for more than just the body. They also have kickass community initiatives, as you can see from the picture on our right!

Interested?? Keep reading for my review!

The spacious, naturally lit studio is heated to approximately body temperature

Students are encouraged to enjoy a cup of tea or kombucha after practicing
Their in-studio boutique offers adorable yoga and loungewear as well as a community space for participants to gather

When I got back from my big trip (studying abroad/eating sausages in Austria for the semester) I realized pretty quickly that my jeans were, well, really freaking tight. As in I had maybe overindulged on those sausages and possibly a had a little too much German beer here and there. Can you blame me?! No, neither can I - it's "happy weight" after all, but it's time to get things back under control. On Friday, I'm planning to share a few tips with y'all about how to get things reined back in - how to feel a little more in charge of your life/fitness routine.

I was super pumped to get an email from Annie Ory while I was in Salzburg - she was inviting me to come "play" at her yoga studio, yogaRIOT! in Portland's darling Sellwood neighborhood (which is exactly where I want to live when I become a big kid). I couldn't refuse an opportunity to push myself out of my typical wellness routine and, in accordance with the studio's motto, shake things up a little bit.

with showers and toiletry items
I was lucky enough to take classes from two amazing instructors, Annie herself as well as Christina, who I loved. We were encouraged in class to play around with positions, test our preconceived boundaries, and create space in our bodies and hearts for change. You might be able to tell that I not only loved my experience at yogaRIOT! but also benefited immensely in emotional and mental areas that I hadn't expected. I've included a few photos of the big, spacious studio as well as some quick facts - next time you're in Portland, I highly recommend dropping in (just $15 for a one-time class) and sweating it out for an hour or more with one of these talented teachers.
