Five Shoulder-Baring Pieces Under $150

Share It:
Finally it's Friday! To celebrate the weekend and the last month left of summer, I rounded up five of my favorite items from around the Internet just for you.

Remember when I mentioned that flirty, shoulder-baring tops and dresses were a summer staple? If you agreed, then check out what I found for you - five adorable off-the-shoulder pieces, all for under $150. Pair with your favorite sandals, destroyed jeans, or a sun hat, and you've hit the hottest summer trend on the head. I love how easy and light these pieces are, and that they can be dressed up or down (even as a swimsuit cover-up) super easily.  For a little extra fun, use makeup to contour your collarbone.

Are you loving the off-the-shoulder summer trend, or wishing it would disappear? Chime in with a comment or find me on Instagram and tell me how you'd style this look :)

Gatsby Earrings from Made in Mechanicsville

Share It:

Side note - I didn't smooth out my skin in any of these. I have some bumps and some acne and some spots, but something tells me I'm not the only one. Just keeping it real over here!

I am IN LOVE with these dangly sparkly little earrings. I'm not usually much of a dangly earring kind of gal, but these are just dainty enough and just fun enough that I am totally cool with throwing them on to jazz up a casual outfit - like the one featured on The PDX Belle earlier this week. I would wear the Gatsbys with my favorite destroyed jeans, yes, but also with a dress or fun romper for formal or a wedding. Extremely versatile (which y'all know I'm all about), understated, and still on-trend. Oh, and you're supporting a fabulous small business. What's not to love??

Do yourself a favor and go check out Made in Mechanicsville to pick out your next favorite pair of earrings. I'm dying to know what you choose!
Comment below and tell me how you'd love to style the Gatsbys yourself -

That is when you go purchase them using your 40% off discount code, PDXMADE :)

Earrings: Made in Mechanicsville // Top: Nordstrom Rack // Jeans: Citizens of Humanity (similar) // Purse: Rebecca Minkoff Medium M.A.B. (on sale!!) // Shoes: Converse // Sunnies: Ray Ban

Hello hello! Remember when I said I was waiting on the mail to come? Well, it came. And I am just as infatuated with my Rebecca Minkoff Medium M.A.B. tote as I thought I would be. One thing that helps me feel immediately more pulled together is having a purse that is not only functional and beautiful but makes a statement, as well. The structure of the M.A.B. tote is perfect for making a little Jenga puzzle out of all my necessities - planner, notecards, cosmetics, wallet... and 100 other things that I manage to stuff in there before leaving the house. Gotta be prepared, right? At least you know who to call when you need a band-aid, stain remover, five types of lip gloss, and styles of sunnies to fit any mood (me, duh). AND because this bag stands up by itself, you won't have to wait for 45 minutes while I fumble around for what you need.

Fun fact: I didn't remember that this black crop top actually has off-the-shoulder sleeves until I got home and was playing dress up in my closet. Oh well. #versatility.

Also, I distressed these jeans (which make an intact appearance here) myself. They used to be the Citizens of Humanity Paley Ankle Jean, which is not currently sold. These ones are similar.

Wanna know how to save a pretty penny and create the hottest trend in denim right in your own home? Sweet. I'll be posting a step-by-step guide sometime soon here :)

One more thing! Those beautiful sparkly drops hanging from my ears? My faves from Made in Mechanicsville. Lauren, the shop's owner, is amazing, and you'll be hearing plenty more about this awesome lady in the next couple days - including where you'll snag these pretties and more - for 40% off with code PDXMADE until the end of August.

Everyday Jewelry from Made in Mechanicsville

Share It:

If you know me, you might know by now that I'm not a big jewelry wearer. I try to keep things as easy as possible and am always on the lookout for simple, elegant earrings to pair with casual outfits (third piece rule, anyone?).

I'm also always on the lookout for fun new local businesses - and I found a fabulous one right located just outside of Richmond, Virginia. I go to school in the tiny town of Ashland, and my boyfriend, Bryan, is from the neighboring town of Mechanicsville. There isn't a whole lot going on in either of these places, as far as fashion is concerned - which is why I was so thrilled to discover Lauren at Made in Mechanicsville. Not only is she the sweetest, most creative jewelry designer, she has an amazing charity project on the side called Made to Shine. On Made's website, you can choose to nominate a deserving woman to receive complimentary designs from Lauren for a special event. What an amazing, selfless, and Christian concept!

We're the lucky ones -- Lauren hooked us up with our very own discount code! Use PDXMADE for 40% off all styles from Made in Mechanicsville until the end of August!

Stick around this week to see how I styled my favorite pairs of earrings and get to know Lauren (#GirlBoss!) a little bit better.

Know of a small business that I'd totally hit it off with, and you'd love to get to know more about?

3 Ways to Build a Grown-Up Wardrobe

Share It:

Internships. Job interviews. Meeting the parents.

Zero of these events require a bodycon dress and Steve Madden platform heels.

Here, I added a scarf and a stack of bracelets (third pieces!) to make my basic outfit a tiny bit more interesting.
Perfect? No. Attainable? YES!
Get more info about this specific outfit by clicking here!

It's time for us to ditch the Forever 21 sweater dresses and start dressing for the parts we want - whether it's a sweet internship or a sweet boyfriend. But how? If you're not sure how to transition your wardrobe from messed-up on a Friday night to grown-up on a Monday morning, let's chat. It's not all blazers and pencil skirts, trust.

Here are three basic tips to consider when you're dressing for your next big event - but mind you, I'm still learning, too

Oh yeah - and since we're still figuring out how to dress for the part, I assumed we might still be on a  tight budget. So all my finds linked here are under $150, with many options under $100.
You're welcome.

1. Find a good pair (or two) of neutral, closed-toe pumps.

Black (like these) for winter, nude (like these) for spring and summer. Pointy-toe is best, and I have a personal problem with patent leather, but I think that might just be me. So, you ask, what do I do with these shoes? Anything! Put them on with your favorite skinnies (see them styled in white here!) and a tunic (see me style this the same one in this post!), with a pair of straight-leg slacks, a pencil skirt, or a shirt dress. If you follow my three easy tips, wearing pumps when the occasion calls won't make you feel like you're playing dress-up in Mom's closet.

2. Accessorize.

One thing I have learned from Pinterest and other bloggers is that once you think your outfit is complete, add a third element - also known as the "third piece rule". Top + skirt does not equal a polished look. Add an interesting jacket, second layer, piece of jewelry, or belt (among other things) to immediately make your outfit more interesting and put together. Want to learn more about the third piece rule and get some ideas on how to incorporate the concept in your own look? Check here or here!

3. Carry a nice, structured handbag. That's in good condition. Everywhere.

Okay, this is something that may go over $150. Your purse or handbag goes everywhere with you (or it should, if you're really playing the grown-up game) and whether you're more of a crossbody or a Mary Poppins type of gal, you need something that will hold up well and that you won't be embarrassed to put on the chair next to you at a nice restaurant. Your purse should help you stay organized instead of creating an even larger mess. I find that it helps to purchase a bag with structure, because it's easier to find things and the bags will stand up on their own instead of slouching around. If you aren't interested in spending the big bucks, at least do me a favor and retire the one that has the peeling pleather handles (I will if you will).

I'm May, and I'm your guide to living a trendy, healthy, and not-too-serious lifestyle.

I'm here because one day I woke up and decided that I would do all the things I had always thought about but been too scared to start.
The next day and a few rough drafts later, The PDX Belle was born.

One thing that's been really awesome about my life is that I've had the opportunity to live in two super-different places that have really shaped who I am - Portland, Oregon and Richmond, Virginia. The PDX Belle is about bridging the gap between the expected and the unique, combining the Richmond and the Portland within you, and learning that there's something special in the most ordinary moments. I want to encourage young ladies like myself to dive into what they've always been afraid of, to step out of whatever box they think they ought to be in, and explore the parts of themselves that get put on hold while we're learning how to grow up.

Do me a favor.

Leave me a comment, email, tweet, or Instagram comment and let me know what I can do for you. What are you struggling with lately? What inspires you? What brought you to The PDX Belle? I want to know everything so that I can provide the best content for YOU.

Waiting for the mail...

Share It:
I FINALLY snagged the Rebecca Minkoff Medium M.A.B. Tote I've had my eye on forever! Hautelook had an amazing sale event - and not even three minutes after it went live at 8 AM PST, the majority of the M.A.B. totes were sold out. No joke. So that makes this one even more special! The items linked in this post are what I've ordered in the past couple days - the tote and off-shoulder top both via the Hautelook app (I had a Nordstrom note burning a hole in my pocket!).

My three favorite trends this summer are structured totes, feminine tops, and distressed jeans. And here they all are in one place. I don't think any of these trends are going anywhere soon, so let's embrace the contrast between floaty, flirty tops and denim with a tough edge. I know I am!

5 Questions for Jacqui Nelson, Ultimate #Girlboss

Share It:
Meet Jacqui, the face behind Swanky J Boutique - the adorable and affordable online shopping site featured in my last post. As you know, I just adore finding and connecting with small businesses - it's super rewarding to support someone that you're able to make a personal connection with. Want to know what it's like running your own fashion boutique? Read on - and don't forget to enter to win the adorable necklace Jacqui's wearing in the photo here!

PS: You can use the code SWANKYMAYXO for 15% off your purchase at Swanky J through the end of July!

1. What was the motivator behind creating Swanky J Boutique? When and how did you become interested in running your own online shop?

I have been an entrepreneur since I was 21. Working for myself and creating my own life has always been so important to me. My dream has always been to start and run my own business, I just needed to figure out what I could do that I could be super passionate about. I have always had a huge appreciation for fashion and jewelry. I ran a very successful jewelry business for 6 years prior to starting Swanky J. After I had my daughter last fall I got a part time job at little boutique and fell in love with retail. I went to my husband and told him I found what I could do and do well. Swanky J was born. We are 100% online because my husband's job is so unpredictable. Once we get settled where we are going to be living we may open a brick and mortar. A newfound passion/ obsession of mine :)

2. What is the story behind the name "Swanky J Boutique"?

My husband and I were racking our brains trying to figure out what to name the shop, so he was spitting out any and every girlie type name you could think of... J Nelson Apparel, Swank, Swanky (+ a million more) then he quickly said Swanky J and I said, stop right now -- that's it! I love that I am the J behind the Swanky and also that our daughters initials are SJ and so is our other baby, our business! It was the perfect fit!

3. What would you say is your mission behind the shop? What are you striving to do/what's the end goal?

My mission is and will remain that I want women to be able to buy super cute, on trend and quality clothes, jewelry and accessories at a reasonable price. Clothes that are going to last through the seasons & they can make amazing memories in. It stinks when you're online shopping and you really want the entire look the model is wearing but you can only afford one of the pieces. I want my customers to spoil themselves with the entire outfit and not break the bank!

4. What is your advice to other ladies looking to start their own small business?

My advice would be to set realistic goals with a time line, have a well thought out business and marketing plan and have adequate funding! People may think starting a business is easy and maybe I make it look easy (which is great) but it is SO much work. I love the saying, I don't have a "9-5". I have a when I open my eyes to when I close my eyes. I do it because I love every minute of it and it never feels like work. One more thing, whatever you decide to do, make sure it's something you are head over heels in love with. People can tell when you're faking it!

5. What's your favorite item in the shop currently?

This is a really difficult question because I hand pick every piece we carry so I literally love it ALL! But if I had to choose I would say our American Girl dress in either red or yellow! It's so girlie and feminine! The fit is perfection too! Throw on some statement jewelry and some wedges and you're good to go!

Tailgate Dress Roundup (under $100!)

Share It:
One thing I absolutely love about going to school in the south is the "girls in pearls, guys in ties" tradition for football games. Granted, I'm not really a pearls kind of girl, but I do love throwing on a dress and cowgirl boots for a day of tailgating. I also think it's fun when both girls and guys rep the colors of their team - except ours are black and yellow. Personally, I look awful in yellow unless I am unseasonably tan - so it's always a challenge to put together an outfit that is somewhat festive without being totally over the top. I'll be missing football season this time around because I'll be abroad, and I know it's a little early to be planning for fall, but that doesn't mean I can't window shop :)

Dressing for a tailgate doesn't mean you have to fit a cookie-cutter preppy stereotype or overdo the color combination. Wearing a simple sundress in a trendy style is way more fun than looking like a mini version of the school mascot.

Want to dress in black and yellow for your next football game? Macon girls, I'm looking at you!

Here are my top picks (under $100) for tailgating this fall:

(don't worry - all the dresses shown below are sold in either yellow or black for those of you who are looking!)

My Favorite Neutral

Share It:

Dress: Rolla Coster via Marshall's, sold out, similar here // Flannel: Men's section of Buffalo Exchange, similar here (under $30) // Shoes: Converse

I snagged this adorable T-shirt dress from Marshall's at the beginning of the summer (there are two other affordable options linked below) and I've been wearing it nonstop. It's stretchy, soft, and perfect for layering - which is good, because Portland is pretty chilly in the mornings. I recently paired it with my favorite neutral piece, a camouflage flannel (you know I love camo) and threw on my Chucks. Easy and super-comfortable for grabbing breakfast or running errands. The flannel is ByCorpus and courtesy of the men's section at Buffalo Exchange, but I FINALLY found a super similar option that I linked for you below - seriously, this flannel is my life -- see it again on The PDX Belle here. You could also throw on a longer jacket, cardigan, or any other flannel/button up over the top of a midi dress like this one if you were so inclined.

Gray T-shirt dresses are slowly starting to take over my closet. Consider yourselves warned ;)

Nordstrom Sale Dreamin'

Share It:
Well ladies, here's the truth - I'm not swimming in cash! Chances are, you aren't either, which is where The PDX Belle usually comes in with some affordable style suggestions for you. By now, I'm sure you know that the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is in full swing. And, if you're anything like me, you're probably drooling on your laptop keyboard as we speak because the other tab open in your browser right now is of your Nordstrom wish list. Spot on? Yep, I knew it!

So here's what we'll do. I'm going to curate a little list of my faves, regardless of price, and get it all out of my system! A little window shopping never hurt nobody, am I right?

So here goes! These are my must-haves-that-I-can't-have :)

I get way more into shopping for accessories and shoes online than I do for clothes - it's just more fun, and you don't have to worry about fit and fabric quite as much. I'm actually thinking I might snag the Timberland Glastonbury sneakers while they're on sale - perfect for my trip to Salzburg this fall. A lot of what you've seen on The PDX Belle leans toward the preppy side, with bright colors and punches of Lilly and Kate Spade here and there. I love a preppy, classic look - but I love a more athletic-inspired neutral style just as much.

The point I'm trying to make is that you don't have to be confined by a single style. Wear what you're happy in, and if that changes drastically each day, own it.

Motivation Drain

Share It:

Going to the gym and eating healthy is (in my opinion) only easy if you're already in the swing of things and have been in a healthy mindset for a while. Going to the gym and eating healthy is not easy when you've been on an extended vacation and really enjoy a glass of wine with your mom on the front porch.

I just got my gym membership back (24 Hour Fitness, anyone?) and have been trying to get in a routine, which is tough when I am absolutely wiped out every evening from twelve-hour days of nannying. I've also had a hard time developing my relationship with food and exercise lately - my brain tells me to feel guilty and bad about myself when I drink alcohol or munch on goodies like pizza or ice cream, which in turn affects the way I see my body and the reasons why I go to the gym. This has been going on for quite some time, and it doesn't feel right.

They say that it's important to exercise out of self-love, not self-loathing, but that concept is challenging to grasp when most women are expected to have a size zero waist, double D breasts, and a nice round butt without any cellulite. I mean come on. That's at the very least a pipe dream for most of us, if it isn't totally impossible.

So the goal this summer? To figure out how to love my body in a way that doesn't require regimented diets and endless amounts of guilt. To find workouts and exercise routines that make me feel empowered and supported, instead of isolated and full of self-criticism.

How am I going to get there? I'm not sure yet. But I'll be sure to let you know :)

Ireland Guide pt. 3

Share It:
Hello again from your friendly neighborhood (amateur) travel guide! I'm here to share a few more of my memorable Ireland experiences with you, as well as to offer some advice for your own travels. I always get made fun of in my family for offering unsolicited advice... So I guess the blog is a good depository for it all!

The third portion of our trip took us through Galway to the Dingle Peninsula and then to Kenmare and finally back to Dublin, which will be the last installment of my little collection Irish travel tips.

Dingle Peninsula - 2 Nights

Stayed: The Alpine House, a larger B&B that felt more hotel-ish than most of the other locations except the Waterloo in Dublin. Personally, the appeal of a B&B has to do with the family running it and the amount of personalization and comfort that you desire. It's less impersonal than a hotel, nicer than a hostel, and hopefully has hosts that serve you a warm breakfast along with travel advice or local banter. Some hosts are more removed than others, and the hosts at the Alpine House fell into that category.

Ate/Drank: Dingle is a little more touristy than some of our other stops, so there wasn't much in the way of authentic shopping. My brother, dad, and I did go on a fun pub crawl though - we were on the hunt for trad music, and my brother and dad were arguing over whether Murphy's or Guiness was better (I don't like either, but when in Ireland...). Everyone had advised us to go to Dick Mack's - but I advise you to skip it. Although the pub may have a fun atmosphere, it is too crowded with tourists to enjoy. Go to O'Sullivan's Courthouse Pub instead for a warm, cozy feel and beer and liquor from local breweries and distilleries.

Activities: Pub crawl. Walking on farm paths near the town of Ventry (I made some bovine friends). There are some ancient ring forts up there that tribal groups would use as a vantage point to spot incoming enemies or predators. The nearby town of Castle Gregory has some water sport options, but only if you're interested in donning a wetsuit. I wasn't.

View of Dingle Bay from hills behind Ventry
Eat Mor Chikin?

Kenmare - 2 Nights

Stayed: The Shelburne Lodge was absolutely amazing. Before she passed, my grandmother loved coming to Kenmare and had formed a relationship with the couple who run the lodge, Tom and Maura Foley. Their hospitality was unmatched, the rooms and beds tastefully and personally decorated. The breakfast? Phenomenal. Worth the splurge, and within walking distance of the town.

Beautiful gardens behind Shelburne Lodge
Ate/Drank: By the time we got to Kenmare, we were sick of eating out all the time and tired of spending huge amounts of money on food. Tom and Maura's son owns a pizza/bistro in town called Pyro, which was good and a nice break from burgers and meat.

Activities: You absolutely should head to Gleninchaquin Park and walk one of the loop trails (of varying difficulty, check in with the owners before hiking). The park is actually a working farm with several hundred sheep on the premises - so when you're looking off amazing viewpoints at the lakes and green valleys below, don't mind one of the rams making a little noise here and there from right behind you :) I got to feed a lamb warm milk and watch an old-fashioned sheep shearing without the crowds that typically accompany such an activity. Gleninchaquin was also a treasured space for my grandmother when she would come, so the park held special meaning for my family.

I loved Kenmare - It was probably one of the highlights of the trip for me. It doesn't feel as traditionally "Irish" as some of the other cities, but comes with phenomenal scenery and views nonetheless.
